The Growth of Crystals at Low Supersaturation

چکیده

Several \\~ell-sllbstantiated examples of both two-dimensional nucleation (ZDN) and multiple scre\v dislocation growth (MSDG) are described. The relations derived in Part I permit quantitative estimates of the edge energy parameter b in some cases, and confirm former interpretations of growth behaviour, except in the two instances now specified. The use of edge rather than surface energy as the controlling parameter for 2DN permits the whisker to platelet transition for Hg (as well as for Cd, Zn. Ag and CdS) to be ascribed to 2DN on edge planes of whiskers growing with XII axial screw dislocation. The linearly saturation-dependent growth rate of alum from solution below cx 1.01, formerly thought to be unimpeded SDG is shown to occur below a transitional region of impeded growth between x I.1 and 1.01. and to be itself impeded. This second linear law may be due tither to a discrete array of multiple dislocations on each face, or to continued growth of higher energy plants after low energy planes have stopped growing. Other examples of MSDG are salol from the melt, at an impeded rate almost linear with (aI). and CloHx, P,. IL and K from the vapour. The observed devclopmcnt of I I IZ} faces on non-growing K crystals is not explicable by crystal growth theory. Dislocation-free [OOOI} faces of ice crystals, and I I I I]. faces of Gc groM from the melt by 2DN. In both cases the nucleation barrier is lov, ered by entropy terms in the nucleus edge energy. The growth of NaCIOz and sucrose from solution may be due to 2DN or SDG.

Determination of Crystal Growth Rate and Morphology of Barium Carbonate Crystals in a Semi-batch Crystallizer

A semi-batch crystallization system is used to determine growth kinetics and morphology of barium carbonate crystals, under a constant pH value and constant temperature in the various relative supersaturations. Results show that crystal growth rate satisfies a first-order kinetic expression at high relative supersaturation, while at relative supersaturation values lower than 3,  the k...

Kinetics Influence of Operation Conditions on Crystal Growth of Calcium Nitrate Tetrahydrate in a Circulating Fluidized Bed

In order to improve the traditional freezing crystallization process of calcium nitrate in nitric phosphate process, crystal growth experiments by adding Ca(NO3)2·4H2O seeds in supersaturated calcium nitrate solution in a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) crystallizer were carried out on crystal growth kinetics. The results showed that the growth of C...

The Growth of Crystals of Low Supersaturation

Growth of low energy planes of perfect crystals at low supersaturation requires two-dimensional nucleation. The formation energy of nuclei of i atoms may be written G’( = -ikT In cc+G,(i), where G( is the saturation ratio. An atomistic evaluation of G,, for a simple model, is in good agreement with the classical form G,(i) = iiD’, with a constant edge energy coefficient b’, even for very small ...

Utilisation of adsorption and desorption for simultaneously improving protein crystallisation success rate and crystal quality

High-quality protein crystals of suitable size are an important prerequisite for applying X-ray crystallography to determine the 3-dimensional structure of proteins. However, it is often difficult to obtain protein crystals of appropriate size and quality because nucleation and growth processes can be unsuccessful. Here, we show that by adsorbing proteins onto porous polystyrene-divinylbenzene ...

Effect of supersaturation on hillock of directional Growth of KDP crystals

KDP single crystals were grown in aqueous solution by using "point seeds" with a defined crystallographic direction of 59° to the Z axis. When hillock slopes on the (100) face of KDP crystals were measured within the supersaturation (σ) range of 0 < σ ≤ 0.06, the slope of hillocks with hollow cores depended nonlinearly on supersaturation. Below σ = 0.02, the hillock slope depended on supersatur...

Surface morphology and kinetic properties in rapid growth of EAFP protein crystals investigated by atomic force microscopy.

The whole process of EAFP protein monoclinic crystal growth with an extremely fast rate has been observed by atomic force microscopy. The results showed that the patterns of the growth images in rapidly growing crystals are complicated. The two-dimensional multi-layered stacks of growth steps are characteristic of higher supersaturation and the growth of steps proceeds in a manner of strong ani...
